Safe Sustainable Affordable Housing for Artist Residency
Currently, I am researching sustainable and affordable housing for artists, with a focus on tiny houses, equitable spaces for rural communities, and the connection between art, small-scale farming, and water consumption. The pandemic highlighted the housing crisis in America, and the class disparities between communities. To combat this, I combined sculpture and social practice to develop the Safe Sustainable Affordable Housing for Artists residency. This program is a self-directed, open-source artist residency with the goals of advocating for better zoning laws and to make housing more accessible for young and struggling artists. Like countless other artists, I have skills but no secure housing, and so began construction of a tiny house in an effort to explore a solution. During this experience, I’ve had to confront the realities of western housing practices, construction site waste, and the materiality of what goes into a home.
